Are you passionate about inclusive education and eager to make a difference? We’re looking for volunteers and caregivers to join a project that empowers students with physical disabilities to explore the world of computer science!

Project Overview:

The NYC Metro Chapter of Makers Making Change and Kirsty McNaught are looking for families, educators, disability professionals (OT, PT, ST, AT), and students with disabilities interested in helping develop a CS curriculum specifically tailored to meet the access needs of assistive technology users such as eye gaze, switch access, and joysticks. Our goal is to foster their interest and skills in this rapidly growing field, helping them unlock their full potential.

Why Computer Science Education Matters for Everyone:

In today’s digital age, computer science is more than just a subject; it’s a fundamental skill that opens doors to innovation, problem-solving, and critical thinking. For all students, especially those with disabilities, learning computer science offers the chance to become active creators and controllers of technology, rather than passive consumers. Imagine the power of learning to tell a computer what to do, instead of having computers dictate what you can do! This project aims to empower students to become active participants in shaping future solutions, including those that directly address their own needs and experiences.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Caregivers: Your participation is crucial! We require caregivers to support students with access to the virtual sessions and provide valuable feedback on the curriculum and activities. Your insights will help us refine and improve the program for future participants.
  • Students: We’re seeking students with physical disabilities who utilize assistive technologies (eye gaze, switch access, joysticks, etc.) and are eager to learn about computer science.

Commitment:

The project will consist of 3-4 virtual sessions, conveniently scheduled to accommodate volunteer and caregiver availability.
